In the last 24 hours, somewhat surprisingly, I’ve seen plenty of commentary on my social media timelines in different threads about the British people’s supposed ‘unwillingness’ to fight austerity and oppose attacks on their living standards.

I’ve seen the British referred to as ‘slaves’, ‘obedient’, ‘brainwashed’, ‘conditioned to servitude’, ‘lacking minerals’, etc., etc. I must say, it frustrated me no end. Well, some comments:

1. The fightback has ONLY JUST BEGUN. How disrespectful to all those actively fighting right now, as they strike to defend and improve pay and conditions across numerous sectors.

2. This is shaping up to be the most severe period of disruption and civil disobedience in at least 40 years, possibly 100. After many years of quiet on the industrial front, workers in Britain are once again moving into action EN MASSE. Forecasts show an estimated 1M working days will be lost in December — the most disruptive month since July 1989. And will increase early next year.

3. Motions for coordinated strike action passed at the recent Trade Unions Congress AGM amount to cross-sector union disruption in the coming period akin to a General Strike — the first in this country since 1926.
